HX COMPRESSOR HOUSINGS FEATURE M.W.E.

MWE - Map Width Enhancement grooves
Basically all compressor housings used for our Cabo Turbo HX program are
equipped with a so called ‘MWE groove’.
This is an air bleed slot, machined into the central
inner compressor inlet of the compressor housing around the impeller, creating
an additional outer air inlet around the basic one. It helps to improve the surge margin by re-circulating the reverse flow
through the air slot around the impeller back into the central front of the impeller inlet when surge is imminent.
The MWE
slot also helps improve the choke side of the map by allowing additional air
into the compressor past the outer throat area of the impeller. These grooves allow extra air to
be pulled and fed directly into the second set of blades on the compressor
wheel outside of the main central inlet.
This most notably increases useable efficiency range
of the compressor as well as overall air flow, hence the name, ‘Map Width
Enhancement’ grooves: it produces a wider / broader efficiency range of the
compressor map, which is particularly important at lower engine Rpm.
It allows
a larger compressor to be used for higher flow requirements without risking
running the compressor into a dangerous surge condition.
